Storage Chest How can you get rid of musty smell from an old storage locker? My husband had this storage box he uses when he went to university 15 years ago. He has been in the attic, garage, basement all these years with an old tent in it. (Have no idea why the tent was inside) I wanted to use for blankets. When I opened, it smelled musty. It is lined with cedar, but that did not stop the smell. How do I get rid of musty smell? Air sun and perhaps a box set of arm and hammer baking soda to absorb odors. If you can not - wipe with a mixture dillluted bleach to remove mold and let dry Hi, I live in my mom and dad's old house .... I know what you mean,,,, try this ..... sofenr leaf tissue,,,, fabrieeze, and herbs such as bay leaves .... shered newspaper and mothballs and keep the lid closed for a week or two and then see how he is after that Crumple up some newspaper and put them in there for some time. You'll be amazed. Get mothballs, baking soda and cedar shavings - close it and let it do it's magic. Back after a week to see if it feels any better. I would either try baking soda or dryer sheets Try some Damp-Rid, for a couple of days, then put it in the sun with the lid open, the sunlight can do wonderful things oders. Frebeze works great on odors, I tried that really works. Try lightly sanding the cedar and vacuum the dust, put a bowl with charcoal as you use the grill, close and let set for several days, the charcoal absorbs the odor. You can check out a local marine / boat dealer if you have one in the region. They have anti-moisture bags in containers or that are similar to granules of desiccant (think I spelled that correctly). They retain moisture and attract all that can be in the trunk. Moisi from bacteria / fungi and can be rooted deep in the woods. Open the trunk and leave it open for a few months. If you want to kill mold, you can take the bleach and use a spritz bottle everywhere inside the chest (dilute bleach with water, maybe some tablespoons water + bleach in the mist). respritz Spritz the entire chest, then bleach and let it soak in. After using the bleach, let the chest hair in the sun for a few days. Wait a week and smell to see if the smell is gone (a slight bleach odor may remain). Any musty smell means spritz with a solution of bleach over. Repeat until the mold is gone. Then, let the chest completely dry. mothballs or baking soda We like the smell of musty Ol'.... full of memories .... keep it as is and buy another new storage box .... lots and lots of baking soda Posted on May 2, 2010.
